Cowboys’ Brett Maher Misses Another Extra Point, Fans Call for End of Experiment

The Cowboys were killin’ it in the second quarter against the 49ers. They put together a solid drive and scored a touchdown with Dalton Schultz, who’s now got three for the playoffs. But then Brett Maher came out to kick the extra point and it was blocked. Fans were like “oh no, not again.” Maher missed a record four extra points in the Wild Card game against the Buccaneers, and now this.

Brett Maher continues to struggle in the postseason

It’s not all Maher’s fault though. The special teams unit got overwhelmed by the 49ers and dropped the ball. But even if they didn’t, replays show Maher’s kick was gonna miss by at least 10 feet to the left of the upright. Basically, it had no chance of going through the uprights. So, it’s time for the Cowboys to end the Brett Maher experiment.

People on NFL Twitter were quick to clown Maher and the Cowboys, which is expected. But honestly, it’s not cool to call for someone’s job. But Maher clearly still has the yips and it’s not fair to the team or the fans. An extra point should be easy for a pro like him and this latest miss is just the icing on the cake.

The Cowboys now have to figure out what to do at the starter kicker position

The Cowboys are in a tough spot now because their backup kicker, Tristan Vizcaino, isn’t on the active roster. They gotta decide whether to trust Maher will get his act together or go for two after touchdowns and fourth downs inside 49ers territory. After this miss, I think most Cowboys fans would go for the latter.

Even Jerry Jones’ pregame pep talk couldn’t save Maher after the 49ers played mind games with him by interrupting his pregame routine. The kicker is just mentally lost right now and there’s no sense in hoping he’ll snap out of it with the season on the line.
