According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the Dallas Cowboys are committed to adding more talent to their offense and are planning to make an “impactful addition” to the team, in addition to bringing back Tony Pollard. While the Cowboys have yet to make a big move, fans have their preferences, with some wanting to sign free agent Odell Beckham Jr., and others suggesting trading for upper-echelon wideouts such as DeAndre Hopkins, Brandin Cooks, or another high-level receiver. Some fans believe that other receivers, like Stefon Diggs, could become available in the future. However, at this point in the offseason, it’s clear that the Cardinals and Texans are actively shopping Hopkins and Cooks.
Dallas Cowboys should consider DeAndre Hopkins
While both Hopkins and Cooks are available, it’s no secret that Hopkins is the superior of the two players. The Cardinals are reportedly seeking a second-round draft pick and a compensatory pick for Hopkins, according to Mike Jurecki of the “Arizona Football Daily” podcast. The Cowboys should not hesitate to trade for DeAndre Hopkins at this price, as the Cardinals are reportedly looking to rebuild, and their quarterback, Kyler Murray, could miss the start of next season as he recovers from ACL surgery.
DeAndre Hopkins has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons, but he is still capable of performing at an All-Pro level. In his first year with the Cardinals, he had 115 catches for 1,407 yards and six touchdowns, but he has played in only 19 of a possible 32 games in the two years since. It’s uncertain whether his injury history is the reason for his surprisingly low price tag. However, the important thing is that the Cowboys could acquire a premium-level receiver without having to give up their No. 26 overall pick.
Plenty of teams targeting the Cardinals receiver
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network believes that a trade for DeAndre Hopkins could happen within the next two weeks. While it’s unclear what Hopkins’ market is, Benjamin Allbright of KOA Colorado notes that the Chiefs are emerging as the favorites. Allbright believes that the Cardinals will likely not get a first-round pick for Hopkins, but they could “probably” get a second-round pick. If the Cardinals ask for an additional compensatory fourth or fifth-round pick, then the Cowboys should still pursue the trade. Hopkins is under contract through the 2024 season and has guaranteed salaries of $19.4 million in 2023 and $14.9 million in 2024, respectively. With all these factors in mind, the Cowboys should act quickly and trade for Hopkins.
